Why I no longer use traditional Chinese characters (“orthodox Chinese”).
On this page
I used to write in traditional Chinese characters as a matter of habit. You can see that in my blog posts going back to 2012.
I am not lying: you can check the history in the Internet Archive. My current domain ends in ganwen.nl; it used to end in .cn.
Even when writing my diary by hand, with a pen, I used traditional characters. So why have I stopped using them now?
I asked myself why I used traditional characters. What for? Chinese cultural orthodoxy? Ease of writing and reading? Because simplified Chinese is now used by the majority, I choose to let go of ideological prejudice, including the ideology of so-called “correct characters”.
I have no objection to anyone using traditional characters. They are part of our culture; that tradition should not be broken and should be preserved!
But you cannot pressure others and insist that they use a particular kind of character! Chinese-speaking online spaces are awful, both on the simplified-Chinese internet and beyond it: weirdos everywhere.
It is absurd enough that people will even dictate which kind of characters you must use to express yourself. 🫥
